Smith said officials were going to round up at least 11 dogs seen in the area where the couple’s bodies were found Saturday morning by five passers-by. State police say dog carcasses and dog fighting paraphernalia were also seized when the Indiana Gaming Commission and other agencies executed search warrants Tuesday in range County. Adam Parascandola of the Humane Society of the United States says many dogs had scars and marks consistent with fighting. Thirty-nine-year-old Brian E. Denny of French Lick was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of animals for the purpose of animal fighting contests and an outstanding warrant for battery.

Democrats from rural and small-town districts especially in the South and West were worried that the party leadership drawn mainly from big cities in the Midwest and Northeast would present too liberal an image. So they drew together to try to protect themselves and if possible to increase their influence. Their story is typical of the narratives behind the many other ideological ethnic and geographical factions that have marked the history of Congress and are a feature of today’s House as well.

Twenty-six-year-old Jessica Johnson pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to commit misdemeanor property destruction and criminal entry. Johnson told a judge she broke into the shelter because her dog had been unfairly classified as a vicious animal and she was afraid it would be killed. Police responding to an alarm at the Metro Animal Shelter on July 25 found a broken window and the dog running loose. They arrested Johnson after a foot chase.
