Broder: Blue Dogs band together to put stamp on reform
Houston Chronicle
The Blue Dog Coalition was formed after the 1994 election gave Republicans control of Congress. Democrats from rural and small-town districts especially in the South and West were worried that the party leadership drawn mainly from big cities in the Midwest and Northeast would present too liberal an image. So they drew together to try to protect themselves and if possible to increase their influence. Their story is typical of the narratives behind the many other ideological ethnic and geographical factions that have marked the history of Congress and are a feature of today’s House as well.

5 miles on one of NASCAR’s biggest tracks Johnson used not pure speed but a loophole that’s come under great scrutiny in recent weeks. The free pass — often referred to as the Lucky Dog — has been in place since 2003 and gives the first driver off the lead lap a lap back every time a caution flag comes out. Developed after safety concerns eliminated the old system of racing back to the yellow it was a compromise for both fans and teams concerned that cars now had no chance of fighting back after falling a lap or more off the pace. In the past a gentleman’s agreement between competitors was in place one which often caused the leader to slow for the yellow and allow a handful of cars behind him to get their laps back. The Lucky Dog has had its share of ups and downs.

— A Wyoming woman has been sentenced to 45 days in jail for trying to spring her pit bull from an animal shelter. Twenty-six-year-old Jessica Johnson pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to commit misdemeanor property destruction and criminal entry. Johnson told a judge she broke into the shelter because her dog had been unfairly classified as a vicious animal and she was afraid it would be killed. Police responding to an alarm at the Metro Animal Shelter on July 25 found a broken window and the dog running loose. They arrested Johnson after a foot chase.
