AP Poll: Half of pet owners give pets human names

com poll of more than 1000 pet owners released Tuesday. Some of the more unusual names: Hollywood and Chichi Mittens both cats; Vegas the Labrador Retriever; Jibber Jack the dog; the Beagle named Talulublue and Louis XIV the Yorkie. In all 49 percent of respondents including 51 percent of dog owners and 50 percent of cat owners had given at least one of their pets a human-like name. The most popular? Max got more mentions than other names in the AP Poll but not enough to give it any broad claim of popularity (less than 2 percent of all mentions). ne database of pet names maintained by Veterinary Pet Insurance also finds that Max pops up more frequently than any other name. There has been a move away from classic dog names such as Spot and Lassie according to VPI spokesman Curtis Steinhoff.

The mystery was sparked when the dog often seen near Accord Pond was found soaking wet Wednesday but without its familiar owner. Failing to come up with any tips to identify or locate the tall white-haired man in his 70s police believe he could have been a homeless person said Lieutenant Michael Peraino a police spokesman. “We’re starting to believe that maybe the man was homeless and that’s why no one is reporting him missing’’ Peraino said. “You’d think that with all the media coverage someone would have called in a missing person saying that my 70-year-old father or grandfather is missing. ’’Police have reached out to homeless shelters in Hingham and surrounding communities with no luck.

The free application can be downloaded. By tapping the “Locate Me” feature users can find the five dog parks nearest to their location plus a map and driving directions according to a news release.

A review of studies in July’s Lancet Infectious Diseases showed that humans carrying the bacteria can spread it to a dog cat or even horse. MRSA skin infections could then be transmitted from pets to other people. ne expert who spoke to the news organization said animal bites are a likelier cause of MRSA infections in people. Even an uninfected animal could cause an infection in a person because MRSA bacteria can be present on the skin of healthy people and could get into and infect a bite wound.
