Ten years ago a federal law made it illegal to sell or possess photos or movies of animals being maimed tortured wounded or killed although it included exceptions for depictions with serious religious scientific or artistic value. Stevens of Virginia who had advertised his pit-bull fighting videos in an underground publication about illegal dog fights sold videos to federal agents in Pittsburgh during a sting operation. He was later convicted under the law and received a three-year prison term.

Riverside County sheriff’s Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela officials said today that Jack Ziniuk was taken into custody after authorities found that the animal’s head had been fed to his dogs. The Sheriff’s Department says the 64-year-old man summoned deputies to his home in Anza on Sunday telling them that his horse was having seizures after being attacked by dogs and needed to be put down. Deputies say the horse had actually been struck on the head repeatedly with a sledgehammer and decapitated with a chain saw. A phone call to Ziniuk’s home seeking comment was not immediately returned. Advertisement yld_mgr.

Amanda Smith was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville on Sunday afternoon with serious facial injuries from an attack by a bullmastiff in an alley in Kulpmont. Smith and a friend were walking the dog when another dog jumped a fence. The mastiff became enraged and turned on Smith and the other girl. The other girl received 32 stitches to repair a torn lower lip.
