Prison officials like to think a hard-bitten corps of sentries with names like Cookie Bongo and Chi Chi has had something to do with that. The institution is the only state prison in the U. to use snarling snapping sentry dogs to patrol its perimeter. In a program begun in 1986 24 mean dogs — mostly German shepherds rottweilers and Belgian malinois with a few boxers and pit bulls — roam the space between the inner and outer chain-link fences 24 hours a day ferociously defending their territory. Get too close to the fence and they will bare their teeth bark and lunge.

From the front foyer of the home where dogs were in stacked cages; to the closet where a mother was nursing pups; to rooms with dogs caged or in playpens; to the rear porch which had a strong ammonia smell — dogs were found “all over the house” George said. “They ran a business out of their house (through) word-of-mouth repeat customers” he said. Animal rights group Peta is offering a reward for any information which leads to a conviction. The pair’s elderly owner then climbed down the ledge to help her pets before all three became stuck. A 10-year-old bichon frise named scar had developed anal sac adenocarcinoma a particularly virulent cancer in dogs and had been given only three months at best to live. The dog’s owners from Milford Mass. were heartbroken and planned to have scar put down the next day.
