Dog attacks prompt cities to look at pit bull bans
The Associated Press
JHNSN – 2 hours ago MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacqueline Sedlar and her 12-year-old daughter were walking home when the girl peered over a neighbor’s fence and a pit bull took a chunk from her eyebrow. utraged Sedlar contacted her city councilman who introduced an ordinance banning pit bulls. But the mayor vetoed the ban in favor of an alternative “dangerous dog” ordinance that some say will be less effective in preventing attacks. The controversy in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis exemplifies the struggle communities nationwide face in trying to address dog attacks. Some have banned pit bulls — a broad term that covers several breeds — and other breeds they consider most dangerous. But other communities are trying to “punish the deed not the breed” with ordinances focusing on dogs with violent histories. American emergency rooms treated an estimated 310000 people for dog bites in 2007 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dog-noise mediation can end the howling
Arizona Republic AZ
Incessant barking can push sleep-deprived or otherwise agitated neighbors to invoke city noise ordinances. The disputes can end with criminal misdemeanor charges and fines. Complaints are so widespread that Phoenix is enlisting help from Phoenix School of Law students to run a free downtown barking-dog mediation service that will start this month. A similar service in the southeast Valley Chandler-based Solve-It! has mediated more than 150 dog-barking cases since 2007 coordinator Wendy Hollingshead said. Dog-barking complaints represent half the agency’s phone calls and one-fourth of scheduled mediations she said. They say most of the problems are caused by pet owners who leave their dogs outside when they are away and don’t realize that bored or anxious animals spend so much time barking.

Salmonella fears spur dog-treat recall
Seattle Times United States
Albertsons is voluntarily recalling Happy Tails multiflavored dog-biscuit products saying they may contain peanut butter that could be contaminated with salmonella. The decision comes after federal authorities urged consumers to avoid foods containing peanut butter until more is known about a deadly outbreak of salmonella possibly linked to a Blakely Ga. facility owned by Peanut Corp. The dog treats have not been linked directly to the salmonella outbreak; Albertsons said it was recalling the products “out of an abundance of caution.
