Embarrassed officials had to issue a public appeal to thepassenger to return the 142 grams of cannabis after the dog failedto detect it and the customs officer forgot in which bag he plantedthe drugs. The incident on Sunday involving a passenger on a CathayPacific flight into Tokyo brought an outcry from the Hong KongGovernment and tourism officials. The drugs — worth almost$US10000 ($A10440) — were recovered on Monday evening fromthe passenger in a Tokyo hotel. It is not known if the passengerwas traced or alerted officials.

Bezuidenhout undertook to pay Van Niekerk R48 987 as well as his legal costs. Van Niekerk stated in court papers that while he was living on Bezuidenhout’s premises in Murrayfield the dog bit him on both his arms. Van Niekerk said Bezuidenhout knew his dog was aggressive at times especially when in the company of Bezuidenhout’s daughter and he should have taken steps to prevent the incident. Van Niekerk said he suffered bite and tear wounds to both his arms and muscle damage to his left forearm. The the ligaments on his left thumb were torn he said. Apart from the physical injuries he also suffered shock and trauma he said.

Amnesty gives dog owners another chance to get legal

Council environmental protection team leader Warwick Robertson says details of the amnesty programme are being finalised. "We hope to put the amnesty programme in place in early June. "It will run for two weeks so dog owners have ample time to have their dogs registered as provided for by law" he says. Mr Robertson announced the amnesty plan at the recent meeting of the Takapuna Community Board.

Sick dog sparks brief evacuation

When several reports suggested many dogs in the area were ill and an Aurora Animal control officer became sick the Aurora Fire Department Hazardous Team evacuated three homes for testing. Canine vomit samples and air samples from the homes came back negative for any contaminants and residents were allowed to go home about 7 p. The reports of several sick dogs turned out to be unfounded.
