In Ginger’s case a scrap with a neighbor’s dog prompted local animal control to declare her a dangerous stray and require her owners to register the animal. “Another little dog was walking in front of the house at the time” Jennifer Daly Ginger’s owner told ABC News. “Ginger took off after her like a squirrel. The Web site was mandated by the state’s general assembly in 2006 and was prompted by a pair of high-profile fatal maulings — one of a toddler the second of an 82-year-old woman.

Dog wardens at Herefordshire Council have been taking pictures of the dogs they pick up on the streets to put on the “Dogs Reunited” website. They said it could help track down the owners of the unchipped and collarless canines. Council leaders said it meant dog owners could check outside office hours if their pet had been picked up. They said the photographs would also show owners that their dogs were being well cared for.

The Dogs Trust has set up branch of its Hope Project in the city which allows people with nowhere to live to register their pets. They can then use an entitlement card to claim free health checks micro chipping neutering vaccinations worming and flea treatments. So far one veterinary practice has signed up for the scheme and the charity is looking for more. It also wants to hear from homeless support workers in Dundee who can help administer the scheme. Lynsey Alston from the Dogs Trust said: "We know from our experience on the Hope Project that the bond between homeless people and their dogs is a strong one.
