He's toilet-trained he goes uncomplainingly to sleep and he no longer chews on his playmates' faces until they bleed. He is 8 months old and I know years from now that I will always remember this summer as the time he and I fell in love. Between this summer and next this latest beagle – the third of my adult life – will age from zero to 1 (or zero to 7) on a fast track to reduce me to mourning sometime in my early 50s. But for now Hamish is at my feet on the terrace of a Brooklyn café trying to sit still as a writer's dog should while I work on this essay.
US fund Steel Partners turns to courts in Bull-Dog takeover battle

Steel Partners’ Japanese arm filed an action with the Tokyo District Court seeking provisional injunctions to bar Bull-Dog Sauce from activating the takeover defence measures which are aimed at thwarting its tender offer. Bull-Dog last week rejected Steel Partners’ advances and announced a plan to try to ward off the takeover bid by allowing existing shareholders except Steel Partners to buy new shares aiming to dilute the US fund’s stake. Steel Partners said in a statement that the move was a discriminatory act in violation of Japanese law that would cause significant financial loss to Bull-Dog. ‘Such a scheme if allowed to be carried out would be detrimental to the legal framework of corporate Japan would weaken international faith in the integrity of the Japanese capital markets and could deter investment in Japanese companies and Japan’s national economy as a whole’ it added.
